April Fun!

Hello Modern Quilters,

April has been a busy month! Not only did we get to take a Field Trip to the International Quilt Fest, we had a fun and productive Service Sew In! If you missed either of these events don’t worry , I took lots of pics!

First up, guest blogger Ann U–

The International Quilt Festival in Chicago was a great time to enjoy modern quilts!!  Of course there were some beautiful traditional quilts too, but the modern ones really added a spark.

There was an interesting challenge on using the traditional Drunkard’s Path block in a modern quilt. The results were striking! Some used a traditional setting with modern fabric, while others used the block in such a way that it was almost unrecognizable as a drunkard’s path block. But when you looked closely, there it was! It was especially true in the paint drop quilt and the gray butterfly quilt. Another used mostly low volume fabrics, and another used a modern palette with blocks of various sizes.  It was exciting to see the block re-interpreted in so many ways!

These and another exhibition of modern quilts brought the quilt show to life. The deconstructing lone star quilt on a beautiful gray background was very creative. There were many that used modern fabrics, negative space and improvisational piecing. Some of the quilts in the floral quilt exhibit had a modern edge as well, many using textured fabrics and fibers to add interest.

Inspiration was everywhere! To be surrounded by color, texture, pattern and the creativity of so many quilters made the trip to the Chicago International Quilt Festival time well spent.
Thanks Ann! And thank you to the Gems for inviting us on this great bus trip!

Service Sew In

Our service project is going strong! On Saturday members completed 18 quilt tops and 4 are quilted already!  At the April meeting there will be tops with batting and backs ready to quilt.  We’re looking for volunteers! Can you help?

  1. I would quilt one-as long as there’s not a deadline. Is there a way I can get it as I don’t think I’ll be at the next meeting. Cheryl
